US President Donald Trump has shocked the NATO Summit in Turkey with harsh statements, announcing the end of the Iran deal and ordering the severance of trade relations with Spain, a member country of the Alliance.

He announced that he had ordered Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to cut off all trade relations with Madrid, describing Spain as a "terrible partner" in the Alliance.

"Spain is a lost cause. We don't want to do business with them anymore. They don't participate, they don't pay. I don't want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade, including visits," Trump said.

The cause of this clash appears to be Spain's continued refusal to comply with Trump's demands for a drastic increase in military spending.

While Trump's statements risk deepening divisions within NATO at a summit intended to project unity, the reaction from Madrid has been restrained.

The office of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has described these statements as "business as usual", emphasizing that bilateral relations remain favorable for both countries, despite the rhetoric of the American President./ CNA
