USA/ Thousands stranded in Nevada due to flooding

The authorities in Nevada are investigating the circumstances of the death of a person at the place where the annual 'Burning Man' festival is held, where since Saturday evening, thousands of participants continue to be trapped there, as a result of flooding caused by storms that included the Nevada desert.

The Pershing County Sheriff's Office said the death occurred during the event, but offered few details amid the ongoing investigation. Authorities did not release information on the identity of the dead person or what may have caused his death, KNSD-TV reported.

Officials are not allowing the gates of parked vehicles to be opened for participants in the festival, which began on August 27 and was expected to end on Monday.

More than 13 mm of rain is believed to have fallen on Friday at the site where the festival is being held, the National Weather Service in the city of Reno announced, adding that at least 7 mm of rain is expected today (Sunday).

Officials have not yet said when festival goers will be allowed to leave.

These developments took place shortly before the climax associated with this annual event, where as every year, a large wooden statue is set on fire as part of the tradition that accompanies this activity.

Burning Man is a festival that organizers say focuses on "community, art, self-expression and self-reliance". It is held annually in the western part of the United States. The festival takes its name from its culminating ceremony, the burning of a large wooden statue called the Man, which takes place on the penultimate night of the event, which is the Saturday night before Labor Day./ VOA
