The Ukrainian army has made significant progress, breaking through Russian defense lines in the south of the country, General Oleksandr Tarnavskiy told British media at the weekend.

According to him, this step will affect faster advancement in the region of Zaporizhzhia.

General Tarnavskiy, who is leading the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the south, spoke days after Kiev declared a strategic victory by taking control of the southern village of Robotin.

The interview was also made after the statements of the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, who rejected the criticism that the Ukrainian counter-offensive is developing at a slow pace.

"Now we are between the first line of defense and the second," said Tarnavskiy.

"At the center of the offensive, we are destroying enemy units that provide protection to other Russian soldiers in the second line."

Tarnavskiy told the British daily The Guardian that the Moscow forces "just stood and waited for the Ukrainian army".

According to him, the forces of Kiev have now left with military vehicles, and that Russia has engaged additional troops in the area.

Under Tarnavskiy's command, Ukrainian troops also liberated the southern city of Kherson last year.

Speaking to the British newspaper, Tarnvaskiy also spoke about Kiev's losses.

"The closer to victory, the more difficult it becomes. Why? Because, unfortunately, we are losing the strongest and the best", he said.

"But now we have to concentrate on some areas and get the job done. It doesn't matter how hard it gets for all of us."

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

President Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
