Ukraine: The airport in Russia has been attacked from its territory

Ukraine's military intelligence said on Friday that the latest drone strike in northwest Russia, which damaged several transport planes, was planned inside Russian territory.

This September 1 claim was made as Russian President Vladimir Putin told students on the first day of school that their country is "invincible".

This week's attack on Pskov airport, about 700 kilometers from Ukraine, is among the latest attacks on Russian territory since Kiev vowed in July to "return" the conflict to Moscow.

"The drones used to attack the 'Kresty' air base in Pskov were launched from Russia," Ukrainian intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said on Friday.

"Four IL-76 transport planes were hit as a result of the attack. "Two were destroyed and two were seriously damaged," he added.

Budanov said that these devices were used by the Russian Ministry of Defense to transport military troops and goods.

The Kremlin said this week that military experts are working to trace the direction of the drones' flight in order to "prevent such situations in the future".

Asked about Ukraine's claims, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to answer, asking that questions be directed to the Defense Ministry.

The Pskov region, which was also targeted by drones in May, is surrounded by NATO member states Estonia and Latvia to the west, as well as Belarus to the south.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

President Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./Rel
