USA: Ukrainian counteroffensive has "significant progress"

Ukrainian forces in recent days have made "significant progress" against Russian troops in the south of the country, a White House spokesman said on September 1.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters that the United States has seen progress near the Zaporizhzhia region in the past 72 hours.

"They have had success against the Russian second line of defense," Kirby said. He also admitted that "anonymous officials" have criticized Ukraine's counteroffensive, saying it "doesn't help".

"Any objective observer of this counteroffensive cannot deny that they have already made progress," Kirby said.

Ukraine launched its counteroffensive against Russian forces in the south and east in June.

In recent days, the Ukrainian army has claimed to have succeeded in breaking the Russian defense lines between the villages of Robotjne and Verbove in the Zaporizhzhia region, and Western military analysts have confirmed these advances.

The Ukrainian army said earlier that its counteroffensive is continuing in the east and south of the country, as Russia's unprovoked war against Ukraine is in its eighteenth month./ REL
