India launches mission to study the Sun

India on Saturday launched its first space mission to study the Sun, less than two weeks after successfully landing an unmanned spacecraft on the moon's south pole.

The Aditya-L1 spacecraft was launched on a satellite launch vehicle from the Sriharikota space center, in southern India, with the task of studying the Sun from a distance of 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. The point, known as L1, provides an uninterrupted view of the Sun.

The spacecraft carries seven instruments to study the Sun's corona, chromosphere, photosphere and solar wind, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said.

After almost an hour, ISRO announced that the launch was "successfully accomplished".

"The vehicle has placed the satellite accurately in the planned orbit. India's first solar observatory has begun its journey to what is known as the L1 Sun-Earth point,” ISRO announced via a message on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.

The satellite will take 125 days to reach the L1 point.

Once positioned, the satellite will be able to provide early warning of particles and radiation from increased solar activity that could knock out power grids on Earth, scientist BR Guruprasad said in an article in The Times of India. ". Early warning can also protect satellites, which serve as the main infrastructure of the global economy, as well as people on space stations.

On August 23, India became the first country to land a spacecraft near the moon's south pole — a historic journey into previously uncharted territory that scientists believe may contain vital reserves of frozen water. After a failed attempt to land on the moon in 2019, India has now joined the United States, Russia and China as the fourth country to achieve this feat./ VOA
