Scholz calls for renewed peace efforts in Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for renewed efforts to bring peace to Ukraine, saying he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have agreed that a new peace conference that would include Russia is needed. .

"I believe that now is the time to discuss how to achieve peace from this state of war, at a faster pace", said Scholz in an interview for the broadcaster ZDF.

Scholzi is under pressure at home after all three parties in the centre-left coalition suffered painful defeats in regional elections a week ago, while groups seeking better relations with Moscow won more votes.

The nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the new party BSW, which oppose military support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian occupation, scored record gains in the election.

Zelensky said in July that he aims to have a plan ready by November so that Kiev can host the second international peace summit in Ukraine, adding that representatives from Russia should also participate. At the first Ukraine peace summit, held June 15-16 in Switzerland, senior officials from more than 90 countries called for Ukraine's "territorial integrity" to be the cornerstone of any peace deal to put an end to Russia's war.

Russia was not invited to that summit and called it a "waste of time".

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.
