USA: The possibility of Iran supplying Russia with missiles, alarming

Supplying Russia with Iranian ballistic missiles would cause a sharp escalation of the war in Ukraine, the United States said on Friday, following reports that Iran and Russia have deepened cooperation on the transfer of such weapons.

White House National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett said the United States is alarmed by these reports.

"Any transfer of Iranian ballistic missiles to Russia would constitute a dramatic escalation in Iran's support for Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine," Savett said.

Reuters reported in August that Russia is expecting a shipment of hundreds of Fath-360 short-range ballistic missiles.

The Wall Street Journal reported on September 6 that short-range missiles have been shipped to Russia from Iran.

The visit to Tehran on August 6 by the secretary of Russia's Security Council, Sergei Shoigu - who was previously Russia's defense minister - has fueled rumors that Moscow is looking to acquire missiles from Iran.

Since the first months of the war in Ukraine, Russia has been suspected of using Iranian-made Shahed and Mohajer-6 drones, many of which have been found after crashing in Ukrainian cities and battlefields.

Iran initially denied it was arming Russia, before giving in and admitting it had supplied "a limited number of drones" to Moscow before the war.

Despite overwhelming evidence, Tehran continues to deny that its drones are being used by Russia against Ukraine. This has not stopped the United States and the European Union from imposing sanctions on Iran for supporting Moscow./REL
