German citizens want a different policy towards refugees

After the Islamist knife attack in Solingen of a Syrian who had to leave Germany, the federal government decided to significantly tighten its migration and security policy.

Numerous proposals have been presented for discussion. But the CDU and CSU, which make up the largest opposition parliamentary group in the Bundestag, are not happy with the plans of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP. They demand the return of illegals at the border and question the asylum law.

Do we need a completely different asylum policy?

Disagreements about which is the right path to follow in this field significantly affect the nerves of the citizens. In the survey conducted by the German public media group ARD, 77 percent of Germans with the right to vote answered "Yes" to the question: "Do we or do we not need a fundamentally different policy on asylum and refugees in the way that in Germany do they come less by themselves?".

However, there are differences in the answer according to political beliefs. Supporters of the Greens and the Social Democrats think there is no need for major changes in asylum and refugee policy.

Continuous border controls

The attack in Solingen also revived the debate about internal security. 44 percent of German citizens said they currently feel unsafe in public spaces. Seven years ago, the percentage of people who felt unsafe in public spaces, on the streets and on public transport was only 22 percent.

Voters of the Greens and Social Democrats undoubtedly feel much safer in Germany than voters of extreme parties.

The polling institute Infratest-Dimap polled 1,309 Germans on September 3 and 4.

Compared to the survey conducted in April of this year, in the current survey there is an increase of 22 percent in the number of citizens for whom the issue of refugees and immigration is the most important political issue. 48 percent of German citizens are concerned about this issue. Concerns about issues such as the economy (20%), social injustice (12%) and climate change (12%) follow far behind./ DW
