Palestinian health officials said Israeli airstrikes in the occupied West Bank have killed five people, including the son of a known militant who is in prison.

Israel has been conducting large-scale raids in the territory in recent weeks and says the operations are aimed at destroying militant groups and preventing attacks. Palestinians fear that the war in Gaza is expanding.

Airstrikes carried out overnight in the northern West Bank city of Tubas killed five people, including Mohammed Zubeidi, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said on 5 September.

His father, Zakaria Zubeidi, is a known militant commander during the second Palestinian uprising in early 2000 who took part in a prison break in 2011. He was arrested days later.

The Israeli military said it carried out three airstrikes in Tubas against militants it said had threatened Israeli soldiers.

Violence in the West Bank has escalated since the war between Israel and Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - began in Gaza on October 7.

Israel occupied the West Bank, along with Gaza and East Jerusalem during the Middle East War in 1967. The Palestinians want these three territories to be part of their future state. Three million Palestinians in the West Bank live under Israeli military rule, while the Western-backed Palestinian Authority has limited control over population centers.

More than 500,000 Jewish settlers, who live in settlements built throughout the territory which are considered by most of the international community as illegal, have Israeli citizenship./ REL
