The Special Prosecutor's Office of Kosovo announced on Wednesday that it has filed an indictment against a suspect for war crimes against the civilian population during the war in Kosovo in 1998-'99.

The prosecution charges the suspect Sh.L, of Gorani nationality, with the commission of crimes, such as murder and torture "in complicity with other persons" in the Prizren region in the south of Kosovo.

"The defendant, in his capacity as a police officer of the Police Station in Prizren, during the war in Kosovo, committed murder, torture, inhumane treatment of the civilian population of Albanian nationality in the municipalities of Suharekë and Rahovec," the announcement states.

The prosecution said that investigations have found that the victims were arrested by the then Serbian police and taken to the police station in Prizren, where they were interrogated by the suspect.

He is suspected of "torture and inhumane treatment" of some Albanian prisoners until he interrogated them at the police station.

"As a result of the torture, the deceased RJ died, while ten (10) other civilians suffered serious physical injuries and psychological consequences", said the Prosecutor's Office.

The suspect is being held in custody pending trial, the prosecution said.

This is the third indictment filed within three days for war crimes in Kosovo.

Last December, the Special Prosecutor's Office of Kosovo said that it has filed a total of 33 indictments, involving 89 people, for war crimes in Kosovo.

Since the end of the last war in Kosovo, about 70 people have been convicted of war crimes before local and international institutions.

From 2000 to 2008, war crimes in Kosovo were investigated by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), while from 2008, by the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX).

In 2018, this mission submitted the cases to the Kosovo Prosecutor's Office and local courts.

During the last war in Kosovo in 1998-'99, over 13,000 civilians were killed and thousands more disappeared.

Over 1,600 people are still missing - most of them Albanians./ REL
