The UN weather agency raises the alarm after record temperatures

Rising temperatures should be a global alarm, the United Nations Weather and Climate Agency said on Wednesday, following record temperatures in August.

Australia, Japan and parts of China and Norway recorded the hottest August on record, according to meteorological agencies.

"It is clear that temperatures are rising beyond what we would like," said Celeste Saulo, head of the World Meteorological Organization.

"This is happening because our action is not enough." Although the exact global average temperature for this August is not known, the EU Meteorological Service has said that the figure will be above last year's record - 16.82 degrees Celsius.

Saulo has called for better monitoring and support of weather agencies, as he believes "more resources are needed"./ CNA
