The Deputy Secretary of NATO resigns/ He will run for President in Romania

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoan announced on Tuesday that he has resigned from his post at the military alliance in order to run for president of Romania in November's elections.

Geoana said he met with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday to inform him of his plans.

This was confirmed to Radio Free Europe's Romanian Service by Geoana herself and by sources within NATO.

Geoana is likely to be replaced in the post of deputy secretary by Boris Ruge, who holds the position of NATO's Assistant Secretary General for Foreign Affairs and Security.

Stoltenberg's term ends on October 1 and he will be succeeded by the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte.

The current Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis, is prohibited from running for a third term by the Romanian Constitution.
