Arrest warrant for opposition candidate in Venezuela

A judge in Venezuela has issued an arrest warrant for Edmundo Gonzalez, the opposition candidate in the country's last presidential election.

This follows a request from the public prosecution, which is loyal to President Nicolas Maduro.

Maduro was declared the winner of the July election by the country's electoral council, most of whose members are also supporters of the president.

But the government has yet to release any evidence to support its claim of victory, while the opposition says its polling data shows Gonzalez won easily.

Once the petition was received by Venezuela's public prosecutor's office, Judge Edward Briceño, who rules on terrorism-related crimes in Venezuela, granted the request and an arrest warrant was issued against Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was the candidate who ran against Maduro in the country's last presidential election. Since the vote, his opposition alliance has released voting data online, which it says shows he won the election by a wide margin of more than 30%.

It is these data that led to the issuance of the arrest warrant.

He is accused of "serious crimes" including "usurpation" of public duties, forging documents, inciting disobedience and sabotaging the system, according to the public prosecutor./ CNA
