The Republican candidate for President in the USA, Donald Trump, has warned that he is in favor of legalizing marijuana for personal use in Florida.

His stance puts him at odds with other senior Republican figures, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has argued that legalizing the use of cannabis would be bad for quality of life.

"One does not have to be a felon in Florida when it is legal in many other states. We don't need to destroy lives and waste money to arrest adults," Trump said.

This proposal is just one of the items Florida residents will vote on in November, at the same time the US elects a new President. Trump is running against incumbent Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.

Regarding the legalization of marijuana for personal use, Trump said that there would have to be rules to "prohibit its use in public spaces, unlike in cities run by Democrats."

DeSantis has claimed that making cannabis legal for recreational use "would turn Florida into San Francisco or Chicago," both cities in Democratic-led states.

According to the BBC, medical marijuana was legalized in Florida in 2016. Cannabis for personal and medical use is legal in 24 US states, 14 other states have legalized medical marijuana.

Marijuana was legalized in Illinois in 2020, and between January and July of this year, cannabis sales reached more than $1 billion.

Legalized growers and sellers must obtain permits and pay taxes, which can be costly and risk making their cannabis more expensive./ CNA
