KFOR: Additional temporary vehicles on the Ibri bridge for training purposes

NATO's peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, said additional assets belonging to its Multinational Specialized Unit are being temporarily deployed to the main bridge over the Iber River in Mitrovica.

KFOR made the comments to Radio Free Europe's question about why there were increased mission forces on this bridge on Saturday.

"Such additional deployments are part of periodic training that KFOR conducts to test its procedures and maintain the highest operational standards," the written response states.

KFOR has a permanent presence on the main bridge over the Ibri, which divides Mitrovica into the predominantly Albanian south and the predominantly Serbian north.

But on Saturday morning, the largest presence of forces and armored vehicles was seen there.

In the afternoon, some of them withdrew.

This development came a day after Kosovo authorities closed several parallel Serbian institutions in the north, which they said were operating under the leadership of Serbia and as such violated the country's constitutionality.

The European Union, the United States and other countries reacted, saying the move was "uncoordinated" with Western allies and a security risk.

Similarly, NATO expressed disappointment, which, through the spokesperson Farah Dakhlallah, said that the actions were not coordinated with KFOR, "despite repeated promises that such a thing will be done".

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu?i?, said that he is "concerned with the violence" and the "repeated violation of the rights of Serbs".

In recent weeks, the Government of Kosovo has been warning about the opening of the Ibri bridge for car traffic.

The international community has asked him to refrain from such an action at this time.

In the statement given to REL, KFOR said that "it is monitoring the security situation in the north" and that it "remains vigilant"./REL
