US Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate in November's election, Kamala Harris, challenged her Republican opponent Donald Trump on Saturday in a conference call with their microphones on all the time.

Harris and the former president have agreed to participate in a debate, which will be hosted by the ABC News network on September 10.

"Donald Trump is caving in to his advisers who won't let him have an open mic conference call. If his staff doesn't trust him, the American people certainly won't," Harris wrote in an X post.

"We are candidates for the American presidency. Let's dialogue transparently - with our microphones all the time."

Trump had expressed his preference for an open mic and said he wouldn't want it turned off during his latest phone call against then-President Joe Biden.

So-called "hot microphones" can help but also hurt political candidates as they can "catch" offensive comments, which are often not intended for the public.

The closed mic also prevents participants from interrupting their opponent.

An ABC spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

It will be the first time Harris and Trump will face each other in a debate since Biden withdrew from the race for the presidency after a poor performance in a CNN showdown in June that raised doubts about his mental fitness.

Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walsh and Republican nominee Jay DeVance have agreed to face off on Oct. 1 on CBS News./CNA
