The municipality of Volos announced the state of emergency on Friday, which will last for one month. This is due to tons of dead fish that have become an environmental bomb for the region.

The official announcement states that:

"By the decision of the Secretary General of Civil Protection Vasilios Papageorgiou, the Municipality of Volos of the Magnesia & Sporades Regional Unit of the Thessaly Region has been declared in a state of emergency of Civil Protection, to face emergencies and manage the consequences resulting from marine pollution of happened in Pagasitic Bay, on 08-28-2024.

The statement in question will be valid from the date of the occurrence of the phenomenon for one month, i.e. until September 30, 2024. After the end of the specified time, the above State of Emergency of Civil Protection will be removed, says the relevant decision. .

At the same time, due to the problem with dead fish, the Authorities recommend avoiding entering the sea in some beaches of Magnesia.

As it was announced on Friday, the Department of Public Health and Social Care of the Thessaly Region recommends avoiding swimming, due to the dead fish in Volos, on the coasts: Sutrali Agrias, Plakes, Anavros, Xenia, Pefkakia - Municipal coast of Volos (Alykon beach), Alykes, Amfanon, Amaryllis.

This recommendation will be valid until the elimination of the bad smell and the presence of dead fish, in order to protect the health of residents and ensure public health./CNA
