Turkey/ Over 100 suspected IS members are arrested

Turkey arrested more than 100 suspected members of the Islamic State (IS) militant group this week, authorities announced Friday.

The country has been hit by several major attacks - including one on a nightclub in 2017 that killed dozens - claimed by Islamic State.

The latest raids were carried out across Turkey, including the capital Ankara and the largest city, Istanbul, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya wrote on social media platform X.

The arrest of 119 people this week follows the detention of 99 other suspects in early August.

Since the fall of the self-proclaimed "caliphate" of the Islamic State in 2019, several suspected members of this group from Syria and Iraq have settled in Turkey.

Turkish authorities have said that since June 2023, more than 3,600 people have been arrested for suspected links to the jihadist group.

Two of the attackers who killed 145 people at a Moscow concert hall in March spent several weeks in Turkey before heading to Russia, according to local authorities.
