The US National Security Adviser meets with the Chinese President

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing today, at the end of a three-day visit aimed at easing the rift between the two world powers ahead of the November elections in the United States.

The meeting aims to maintain communication and avoid differences over Taiwan and other issues that could deepen tensions between the two superpowers.

Both governments are interested in maintaining normal relations, before changes in the White House after the November 5 presidential election.

Mr. Sullivan said he was sent to Beijing by President Joe Biden to "maintain the high-level strategic communication that," he said, "is essential to the responsible management of the relationship."

He said that since the two leaders met last November, significant progress has been made in terms of cooperation in areas as diverse as the war on narcotics, military communications, security and the threat of artificial intelligence.

"We are committed to maintaining high-level diplomacy, and to the end, President Biden looks forward to engaging with you again in the coming weeks," Mr. Sullivan said.

The White House said yesterday that both countries are planning to hold a phone call between Presidents Biden and Xi in the coming weeks. There was no indication whether the two leaders will meet in person before Mr. Biden leaves the White House.

President Xi said that China and the United States should be responsible for history, people and the world, and should be a stability factor for peace and a propeller for common development.

"China's commitment to healthy and stable relations remains unchanged. The principle for dealing with relations based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and cooperation in favor of both parties remains unchanged".

During his stay in Beijing, Councilor Sullivan also met with China's top foreign policy official, Wang Yi.

The White House said Mr. Sullivan raised concerns about Beijing's increasingly close relationship with Moscow, the Taiwan issue and the South China Sea.

He also had a rare meeting with a senior Chinese military official, Zhang Youxia, earlier on Thursday./ Voa
