The UN criticizes China for its "problematic" policies against the

The United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) said China's "problematic" policies are still in place, two years after a scathing report accused Beijing of "crimes against humanity" in Xinjiang.

China has been accused of imprisoning more than 1 million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in the northwestern province of Xinjiang, a charge Beijing denies.

OHCHR said on August 27 that it has held a series of discussions in Geneva with Chinese officials since February last year, talks that enabled UN human rights chief Volker Turk to send a team to Beijing from 26 May until June 1 of this year.

This team held talks with Chinese authorities, separately on "policies against terrorism and the criminal justice system," said OHCHR spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani.

"In Xinjiang, we know that many problematic laws and policies are in place," she said.

The OHCHR asked China to "conduct a thorough review" of legal requirements related to national security and anti-terrorism laws, but also the protection of minorities against discrimination.

This office called for progress "in the protection of human rights in China", but also to investigate alleged violations, including torture.

At the end of August 2022, this office published a report saying that China may have committed "crimes against humanity in Xinjiang".

That report, which was disputed by China, cited "reliable" data on torture, forced medical treatment, violence and forced labor.

China denies these accusations and insists that there are "re-education" centers in Xinjiang to enable them to fight extremism./ Rel
