NATO base in Germany on alert for suspected Russian sabotage

German security sources warned today that a NATO base in the country is being prepared for a sabotage attack by a drone. Local media said that the NATO base in the western town of Geilenkirchen is the possible target of the sabotage. from Russia.

Although there was no concrete evidence for the assumptions, the German state agency 'dpa' cited security sources that alerts indicated a possible drone attack, wrote the Turkish Anadolu Agency.

Last week, the security level was increased for US bases in the North Rhine-Westphalia region, following intelligence alerts. But after nothing happened, the security level was lowered again at the weekend.

Initially all 'non-essential' employees were sent home, as according to NATO jargon, the second level of security 'Charlie', means that an incident has occurred or there is evidence of terrorist threats against the alliance.

NATO's Geilenkirchen air base mainly hosts Awacs, specialized aerial surveillance aircraft with mushroom-shaped radars that can track vehicles up to 300 km away.

A NATO spokesman said about 1,600 people normally work at the base.

Across Germany there are about 40 US military bases, with a military personnel of about 40,000 people.

The spokesman of the German Ministry of Defense, Arne Collatz, did not comment on reports of a possible attack, but said that no drones were spotted in the airspace of the airport, writes Anadolu.

Last month, the German security services had warned of an increase in the level of Russian sabotage activity in Europe, mainly with cyber attacks./CNA
