Tanker "Delta Sounion" engulfed in fire after Houthi rebel group attack in Red Sea/Houthi Military
The United States warned of a possible ecological disaster in the Red Sea after the Houthi rebel group attacked a tanker last week .

US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Sunday evening that the Security Council "must condemn" the Houthi rebel group's attack on the Delta Sounion tanker.

According to her, "the brazen actions of the Houthi rebels threaten to create an ecological catastrophe with devastating consequences for the entire region."

She said the UN Security Council should demand immediate compliance with a resolution passed in January calling on the Houthi rebels to stop attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

The Iran-backed Houthi group said Thursday that the attack on the Greek tanker was a sign of solidarity with Palestinians over Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza.

Rescue teams evacuated the crew of the tanker after the attack, which was engulfed in flames.

The European Red Sea Maritime Mission reported that the tanker was carrying 150,000 tonnes of crude oil.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on Saturday that the Houthi rebels "have made it clear that they are willing to destroy the fishing industry and the regional ecosystem that Yemenis and other communities in the region rely on to live, just as they have also undermined efforts to send humanitarian aid to the region through their reckless attacks."

Attacks by Houthi rebels have disrupted trade on sea routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, forcing many companies to reroute ships to longer and more expensive routes./VOA
