The Pentagon chief ordered two aircraft carriers to remain in the Middle East, a change from previous US military plans.

The United States was not involved in Sunday's attacks but provided intelligence about Hezbollah attacks, according to a senior US official.

US General CQ Brown, the US Chief of Staff, arrived in Israel on Sunday as part of a regional visit aimed at preventing an escalation of the situation. He is expected to meet with senior Israeli military officials.

Meanwhile, the militant group Hamas announced that it has rejected Israel's new conditions for a cease-fire in Gaza.

In a statement to Hamas' Al-Aqsa TV on Sunday, Hamas official Osama Hamdan rejected Israel's new terms and said warnings about the possibility of a deal were false.

The leader of the Hezbollah group, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, said on Sunday that his group will assess the impact of rocket and drone strikes on Israeli military targets before determining whether to continue the attacks.

In a televised address, he said Hezbollah had carried out the attack "as planned", rejecting claims by the Israeli military that their pre-emptive strikes had prevented a wider attack.

He spoke 12 hours after the heaviest exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah since the start of the Gaza war and said the militant group had deliberately not targeted civilians and public infrastructure, including Ben Gurion Airport. Nasrallah said the main target of the attack was a military reconnaissance base, located 110 kilometers inside Israeli territory.
