Ukraine and Russia exchanged hundreds of prisoners of war on Saturday, as Kiev marks the anniversary of its independence.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said 115 Ukrainian prisoners were freed in the swap deal with Russia.

"Even 115 of our defenders have returned home today. They are fighters from the National Guard, the Armed Forces, the Navy, and the State Border Service," Zelensky said in X.

"We remember everyone. We are looking for them and we are making efforts to bring them home," he added.

Ukraine said earlier that Russian soldiers captured in Russia's Kursk region would be used in "exchange" for the release of Ukrainian troops captured by Russia.

The US Institute for the Study of War estimates that, based on statements by Ukrainian officials, more than 2,000 Russian soldiers have been captured during the first week of Ukraine's incursion into Russian territory .

Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry said 115 of its troops were released in exchange for the release of the same number of Ukrainian prisoners.

According to her, their exchange was mediated by the United Arab Emirates.
