Migrant boat collides with Greek Coast Guard boat

A 39-year-old immigrant died in an incident near the coast of the Greek island of Symi. Greek media reports that the incident occurred when a raft with migrants leaving the coast of Turkey collided with the Hellenic Coast Guard boat.

According to the announcement made by the Coast Guard, this morning, a Coast Guard patrol, which was carrying out a scheduled patrol, spotted a suspicious boat in the marine area northwest of Symi Island.

The boat carrying migrants did not obey the instructions of the Greek Border Guards and increased its speed in an attempt to escape.


This was followed by a chase by the Hellenic Coast Guard, using sound and visual signals, which the migrant boat did not respect, repeatedly performing extremely dangerous maneuvers and ramming the police boat on the left side, near the captain's position.

"To prevent immediate danger to the PLS and its crew, first warning shots were fired without effect and then targeted shots were fired at the outboard motor aimed at immobilizing the boat.

After the boat was stopped, an inspection was carried out by the PAS crew, where it was found that a 39-year-old man was mortally wounded, possibly by a fireball. The 39-year-old was transported by another patrol boat to the port of Rhodes and was transferred to the hospital, in order to perform a necroscopy by the forensic doctors of Rhodes".

It is further clarified that there were 14 immigrants, 5 minors, 8 men and 1 woman on the boat, while the Coast Guard arrested the two traffickers./CNA
