The new Iranian chief diplomat calls for dialogue with the EU

The new Foreign Minister of Iran, Abbas Araghchi, called for bilateral issues with the European Union to be resolved through dialogue, after a telephone conversation with the bloc's chief diplomat.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the development of relations with the EU in an environment based on mutual respect," Araghchi said, according to a media release.

Relations between the EU and Iran have deteriorated in recent years.

The European bloc accuses Tehran of failing to curb its nuclear activities, providing support to Hamas — the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union — of supporting Russia's war against Ukraine and violating human rights.

The development of reports "requires dialogue to resolve issues between the two parties and improve the wrong policies of European states", added Araghchi.

Meanwhile, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, wrote on the X platform that he had talked with his Iranian counterpart about the "possibility of renewing engagement in areas of common interest".

He said that during the conversation it was discussed about the "need to reduce tensions" and "stop military cooperation" with Russia and to curb nuclear activities.

Borrell said that such a dialogue is "fundamental and necessary for the reduction of regional tensions".

Iran and its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah - declared a terrorist organization by the United States - have vowed to take revenge on Israel, after the killing in Beirut of a commander of Hezbollah and the political chief of Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization from the US and the EU – in Tehran last month. Araghchi, who took over as chief diplomat earlier in the week, is known for his closeness to the West.

He was previously the chief nuclear negotiator and played a key role in reaching the nuclear deal between Iran and Western powers in 2015.

But, in 2018, the then US president, Donald Trump, withdrew the US from the agreement. Efforts to revive the agreement so far have not been successful./ Rel
