India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has called on Russia and Ukraine to find a path to peace "as soon as possible", ahead of his historic visit to Kiev.

Modi stayed in Warsaw on August 22 to meet Polish officials before traveling to Ukraine.

His visit to Kiev will be the first by an Indian leader since the two countries established bilateral relations more than 30 years ago.

"India strongly believes that no problem can be solved on the battlefield," Modi said in the Polish capital, adding that his country supports "dialogue and diplomacy to establish peace and stability as soon as possible." India was criticized by several Western countries after Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last month. On the day of his visit, a deadly Russian missile attack on a children's hospital in Kiev took place, which was condemned and strongly criticized by the international community.

The United States was particularly concerned by Modi's two-day visit to Russia because it sees India as an important pillar in its strategy to contain China's rise.

The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, said after the meeting with Modi that "history has taught our countries the importance of respecting the rules, respecting borders [and] territorial integrity".

Modi said in a statement released before leaving for Poland that "as friends and partners, we hope for the return of peace and stability in the region as soon as possible."

Modi will hold a meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and will "share with him his views on the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine", the announcement states./ Rel
