The search continues for 6 people/ What may have caused the sinking of the

The search continues for six people who were aboard a luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning. Many questions have been raised about the sinking of the yacht. According to the vessel tracking app, the yacht left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on August 14 and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a sailing status of "at anchor".

It is believed that the ship was hit by a tornado on the water. There are separate reports that the boat's mast snapped during the freak storm, and other factors in the boat's sinking include water entering through the hatches and doors, which were left open due to the warm weather off the Italian coast. Did the mast of the yacht break? The latter was built in 2008 and last overhauled in 2020. Bayesian had a 75 m (246 ft) mast which is claimed to be the tallest aluminum mast in the world.

The captain of another yacht moored nearby at the time of the storm said there was a "very strong tornado burst" and he had to fight to keep his vessel steady. He saw the Bayesian's mast "bend and then snap," according to Italian daily Corriere della Sera. Officials from the responsible authorities said it is difficult to say whether the mast broke. Since mid-June, the sea surrounding Sicily - the western Mediterranean basin - has experienced a severe heat wave.

The European Union's climate change agency reported that sea surface temperatures in the region have consistently exceeded 30°C (86F) - four degrees higher than the 20-year average for this time of year. According to a witness, everything happened within 60 seconds. So far the Italian coast guards have managed to find the dead body of the Canadian chef. Six other people are missing, including the owner of the yacht, the British tycoon and his daughter./ CNA
