CIA director Burns arrives in Sarajevo for a visit

The director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), William Burns, arrived in Sarajevo on Tuesday for a visit, sources close to the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BeH) confirmed for Radio Free Europe.

Burns is expected to hold several meetings in Sarajevo, among others, with the director of the Intelligence and Security Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Almir Xuv, as well as with members of the BiH Presidency and the BiH Foreign Minister.

The Presidency and the Ministry have not been able to share more data with REL about Burns' visit.

A former diplomat and former ambassador to Russia, Burns is a central figure in the administration of US President Joe Biden, as he is also a member of the White House presidential cabinet.

President Biden appointed him to the position of CIA director in January 2021.

Burns was sworn in as CIA director in March 2021, becoming the first career diplomat to serve as director. President Biden promoted him to the Cabinet in June 2023.

He has served six presidents and administrations (of both parties) during nearly four decades of public service in diplomacy and intelligence. He is only the second diplomat in history to become Deputy Secretary of State. He was also the US ambassador to Russia and Jordan.

After retiring from diplomatic service in late 2014, Burns served as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

He graduated from LaSalle University with a degree in history, and holds a master's and doctorate in international relations from the University of Oxford.

The former director of the CIA, John Brennan, was the last from this agency to visit Sarajevo, after his visit in 2016./ Rel
