The Israeli army said on Tuesday it had recovered the bodies of six hostages taken by Hamas militants on October 7 in southern Israel, which has fueled the war in Gaza.

Hamas is the group that leads Gaza, declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

The army said in a statement on Tuesday that its forces withdrew the troops during an overnight operation in southern Gaza.

The military said the bodies of Yagev Buchshtab, Alexander Dancy, Avraham Munder, Yoram Metzger, Nadav Popplewell, and Haim Perry were recovered, without saying when or how they died.

The operation comes as the United States, Egypt and Qatar are trying to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that could result in the release of dozens of hostages held by Hamas.

Hamas is still believed to be holding around 110 hostages taken in the October 7 attack.

Israeli authorities estimate that about a third of them have died.

As a result of the October 7 attack, the Israeli army has launched a military offensive in Gaza, with the aim of destroying Hamas.

More than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since then, according to local authorities in Gaza./ REL
