Osmani talks with the KFOR commander about the issue of the bridge in Mitrovica

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has said that the Kosovar authorities should consult and coordinate with NATO in particular for the construction of a joint plan for the opening of the bridge in Mitrovica.

Osmani made these comments during a meeting on Monday with the commander of the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR, Ozkan Ulutas, the Presidency announced.

While repeating her position that the issue of opening the bridge should not become a topic of dialogue with Serbia, Osmani reiterated that the opening of the bridge "as an act of normalization and integration is in the interest of all citizens, regardless of ethnicity".

The government of Kosovo announced at the beginning of August its intentions to open the bridge over the Ibër river for vehicle traffic, which divides Mitrovica in the south with an Albanian majority and in the north with a Serbian majority, despite all the opposition from the USA, EU- here are the places of QUINT.

This also prompted protests by Kosovo Serbs in the north last week, who oppose the opening of the bridge.

Kosovo and Serbia agreed in 2014, during the dialogue mediated by the EU, that the bridge be opened for traffic, but this has never been realized in practice.

Now the bridge is open only for pedestrians and the Italian KFOR soldiers are on it. Members of the Kosovo Police are located near it as well.

Last week, the American ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, said in an interview for Radio Free Europe that there is a real risk that the opening of the bridge in Mitrovica at this time could affect the safety of NATO soldiers, including those Americans.

Also last week, Osmani asked local authorities to ensure that the bridge in the north is opened in a way that does not provoke conflict with the country's allies, nor the increased presence of KFOR in that part of the country.

KFOR has warned several times that it will not hesitate to act to respond to security-related developments./ Rel
