The Lebanese group Hezbollah - designated a terrorist organization by the United States - has fired more than 50 rockets, hitting a number of private homes in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

The August 21 attack came a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with fellow negotiators from Egypt and Qatar in a diplomatic effort to broker a ceasefire in the Gaza war.

Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US and the EU - and Israel have yet to overcome differences over reaching a ceasefire in Gaza.

Emergency teams in the Golan Heights said they treated a 30-year-old man who was injured during the attacks. A house was engulfed in flames and firefighters said they prevented a bigger tragedy after stopping the gas leak.

Hezbollah said the attacks were in response to an Israeli airstrike deep in Lebanon on Tuesday night that killed one and wounded 19 others. Hezbollah has fired over 200 rockets at Israel since Israel targeted a Hezbollah weapons depot about 80 kilometers from the border.

Since the war in Gaza began on October 7, Hezbollah and Israel have exchanged fire, mostly along the border. The firefight has killed more than 500 people in Lebanon – mostly Hezbollah members and 100 civilians – and 23 soldiers and 26 civilians in Israel.

Israel took the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Middle East War and then annexed them. The US is the only country that recognizes Israel's annexation of this territory, while the rest of the international community considers the Golan as occupied Syrian territory./ REL
