USA accuses Iran of hacker attacks

According to the US secret services, the US election campaign is increasingly becoming a target of cyber attacks from Iran. A little over a week ago, Donald Trump's election campaign team announced that it had been the victim of hackers. Now, the secret services announce that they attribute this and other attacks to Iran.

"We have observed increasingly aggressive Iranian activity in this election cycle, particularly aimed at influencing the American public and cyber operations against the presidential election," said a joint statement from the Office for the Coordination of National Intelligence (ODNI). United States Cyber ??Security, Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This also includes "compromising former President Trump's campaign."

However, Iran's mission to the United Nations denied Iran's role in the hacking attack. He also asked the US to provide evidence for the allegations. "Such accusations are unsubstantiated and have no basis," the mission declared. Iran had neither the intention nor the motive to interfere in the US presidential elections.

Harris' team was also affected

In the latest case involving the Trump campaign, a 271-page internal file on vice presidential candidate JD Vance was leaked to the US media. One of the purposes of this type of dossier in the US election campaign is to better prepare for political attacks from the opposing side. However, the secret services did not mention the file in their announcement.

Hacker attacks do not only target the Republican election campaign, but also worry Democrats. Kamala Harris' team announced that it had been the target of a foreign cyber attack.

The intelligence services have now confirmed it in their joint statement: Iran has tried to gain access to people with direct ties to both sides.

Google and Microsoft fight foreign hackers

Intelligence services accuse Iran of trying to influence the election campaign with these attacks. Iran seeks to "stir discord and undermine confidence in our democratic institutions." Iran views the November 5 presidential election as particularly important to its national security interests, the US secret services have warned. The approach is not new.

In the American election year, not only political parties, but also private companies are encountering more and more problems with hacker attacks from abroad. Microsoft confirmed the fact in a report earlier this month. Google blames a group of hackers close to Iran's Revolutionary Guard for trying to break into the email accounts of people close to Joe Biden and Trump./ DW
