Iran announces closure of Strait of Hormuz/ Accuses US and Israel of violating

The Iranian Central Military Command, Khatam al-Anbiya, announced today the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, describing the decision as a response to the recent Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, which Tehran says violate the agreement reached this week between Iran and the US.

In a statement carried by Iranian state media, authorities said the closure of the strait was a first step against what they considered violations of commitments by the US and Israel. Iran warned that further measures could be taken if the attacks continued.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz was one of the main points of the recent agreement between Washington and Tehran. According to Iran, the agreement provided for the cessation of military operations in southern Lebanon, where the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah operates.

Although Israel and Hezbollah had declared a ceasefire on Friday, the Israeli military carried out new attacks in southern Lebanon overnight. Lebanese authorities reported numerous casualties, while Israel said it acted in response to rocket attacks launched by Hezbollah on its forces in the area.

However, the United States disputes the Iranian claim that the Strait has been completely closed. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that maritime traffic continues and that US forces are monitoring the situation to ensure freedom of navigation in this vital route for global energy trade.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world's most important shipping lanes for oil and gas, so any disruption to traffic there could have major economic and geopolitical consequences. /CNA
