Norway restricts use of Artificial Intelligence in schools

The Norwegian government has decided to significantly limit the use of Artificial Intelligence tools by students, especially in primary education, with the aim of protecting the learning process and improving school results.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store stated that students aged 6 to 13, attending primary education, will not be allowed to use Artificial Intelligence tools.

According to him, there is a risk that children will skip important learning milestones if they rely on technology.

"The most important thing in school is for children to learn to read, write and solve math problems ," Store emphasized during a press conference.

The new rules will come into effect at the start of the new school year at the end of August. For students aged 14 to 16, the use of Artificial Intelligence will only be allowed with caution and under the supervision of teachers.

Meanwhile, young people between the ages of 17 and 19 will learn to use technology responsibly, in preparation for higher education and the job market.

The decision comes amid concerns about falling educational test scores. In 2024, Norway banned the use of smartphones in schools and strengthened teachers' powers to maintain discipline in the classroom.

The Norwegian government also announced that it will propose a law to restore the wider use of books in schools, reducing the dependence on tablets and digital devices that have been widely used in recent years.

In April, Norwegian authorities also unveiled plans to ban the use of social media for children under the age of 16, as part of a broader strategy to protect young people from the excessive influences of technology. /CNA
