Fear, anonymity and the personal cost of reporting

Let's put it bluntly: in Albania, denouncing public corruption has a cost. People are afraid of losing their jobs, their services, their contracts, their peace of mind, and even their personal safety. This fear is not imaginary. In many cases, it is based on experience.

Therefore, anonymity may be a reasonable solution in the first phase, especially when the goal is to raise the alarm and test institutions or media on existing material.

But the flip side must also be said: anonymous reporting has its limits. It can spark interest, but it is not always enough to carry the weight of a full investigation. When the matter goes deep, witnesses, additional documents, and people who keep their word are often needed.

This is where cold calculation comes into play.

Is there enough evidence for the case to stand without exposing the whistleblower? Is there a way to deliver the information through multiple channels so that it is not easily suppressed? Does it make sense to make the case public immediately, or should other evidence be obtained first?

There is no single recipe. There are only choices that must be made with a clear mind./ CNA
