Iran's parliament approves the new president's full cabinet

Iran's parliament on Wednesday approved the 19-member cabinet of reformist President Masud Pezeshkian, accepting for the first time since 2001 the full list of ministers without making any changes.

The August 21 vote included the appointment of 61-year-old diplomat Abbas Araghchi to the post of Iran's foreign minister. Araghchi was a member of the negotiating team that reached the nuclear deal with world powers in 2015.

Pezeshkian, a doctor and former health minister, defeated ultraconservative candidate Saeed Jalili in a July 5 runoff and was sworn in as president earlier this month. Early presidential elections were called after the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May.

Pezeshkian has called for "constructive relations" with Western countries and is in favor of reviving the 2015 deal, which fell apart after then-US President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the deal in 2018.

Since then, Iran's weak economy has worsened as a result of tough sanctions.

Pezeshkian has also said that he supports the principles of the Islamic republic and has insisted that the policies set by Supreme Leader Khamenei must be followed.

He has questioned Iran's methods of mandating the Islamic headscarf for women, following the 2022 death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the "morality police" for allegedly wearing the headscarf in inappropriate way.

Pezeshkian also emphasized that, while the headscarf law must be implemented, "there should never be annoying or inhumane behavior towards women"./ Rel
