Ukraine says it has not seen any movement of Belarusian troops near its border

Ukraine's border service said on Thursday that Kiev had seen no signs of Belarusian troops or heavy military equipment moving near the border with Belarus, after Minsk announced days earlier that it was sending additional forces to the area.

Belarus President Alyaksandr Lukashenka said on Sunday that nearly a third of the Belarusian armed forces had moved along the border, claiming that Kiev had stationed more than 120,000 troops there.

But Ukrainian border service spokesman Andriy Demchenko told national television that "we are not seeing any movement near our border - neither personnel nor military equipment." He added that the situation near the Belarusian border "has not changed in general".

On Monday, Andrei Lukyanovich, Belarus' air defense commander, said the air force had "greatly increased" its presence near the border.

Anti-aircraft missiles and air force troops are stationed there, he said.

Days after Ukraine launched a surprise incursion into Russian territory on August 6, Lukashenka - a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin - suggested, without providing any evidence, that Kiev may have intentions to attack Belarus.

Russia launched its full invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and now controls about 18 percent of its territory in the east and south.
