Kamala Harris in the spotlight on the last day of the Democratic National

Vice President Kamala Harris will officially accept the historic appointment as the candidate of the Democratic Party on the last day of the National Assembly on Thursday evening.

The speech gives her one of the few opportunities left before the election to lay out her vision for the country to an audience of millions of Americans and argue why they should vote for her, taking aim at her Republican rival Donald Trump.

Ms. Harris' acceptance of the nomination is the culmination of an unusual month in American politics since President Joe Biden withdrew from the race for a second term.

According to a campaign official who spoke on condition of anonymity, Ms. Harris has three goals for her speech. She will tell the story of her rise from a child of a middle-class family to the position of prosecutor in defense of others; she will also talk about the contrast between her "optimistic" vision and that of Mr. Trump, which she considers "negative"; as well as convey a sense of patriotism.

The vice president spoke briefly on the floor of the House on Monday, when she thanked Mr. Biden and extolled his achievements as president, and again on Tuesday, when part of her rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was broadcast on the floor of the House.

Other figures scheduled to speak Thursday are Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, civil rights leader Al Sharpton and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten.

Ms. Harris is the first black woman and the first person of South Asian descent to accept the nomination as a major party presidential candidate.

She speaks a day after Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz accepted the nomination as a vice presidential candidate. Many Americans did not know Mr. Walz before Ms. Harris chose him as a candidate, so his speech was an opportunity to introduce himself to them.

He emphasized his experience as a football coach, his service in the National Guard and his family's struggles to have children.

Mr. Walz brings to the race the life experience of someone from the central part of America, and Democrats hope that he will win over voters from that part of the country who can identify with him./ Voa
