Germany/ NATO air base increases security after threats

NATO air base in Geilenkirchen raised the security alert after receiving information about a possible threat As a safety measure, non-mission base personnel were sent home.

A NATO air base in western Germany on Thursday raised its security to the second-highest level, citing intelligence reports of a possible threat.

"We have raised the level of security at NATO's Geilenkirchen air base based on information from the intelligence services that speaks of a possible threat," the base announced in a post on the X social media platform.

"All non-mission base personnel have been sent home as a precaution," the base said in a statement on social media platform X, without giving further details. "The safety of our staff is our top priority. Operations continue as planned."

A Geilenkirchen air base spokesman said security levels have been raised at Charlie. According to NATO's definition, Charlie level means that an incident has occurred or that there is evidence that suggests a high probability of terrorist action against the alliance. Authorities did not provide further details, but said there was no cause for concern and that security had been increased as a precaution.

The plan to install long-range US missiles in Germany divides public opinion.

Repeated threats

It is the second time security has been beefed up at a base that hosts NATO's fleet of AWACS surveillance aircraft.

Last week, a military base in Cologne was cordoned off to investigate alleged water sabotage after a hole was discovered in a fence near drinking water storage facilities.

NATO has previously warned of threats from Russia that could include acts of sabotage and cyber attacks.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg declared in June that the Western military alliance was seeing a pattern developing and that the latest attacks were the result of increased Russian intelligence activity./ DW
