The US State Department said it appreciates Serbia's continued partnership "in combating Russia's aggression in Europe and in providing humanitarian assistance to the Ukrainian people."

In a response sent to Radio Free Europe's Balkan Service, DASH said that the United States' cooperation with Serbian leaders is focused on "strengthening the strategic partnership between our two states as Serbia builds a secure and prosperous future in Europe that is invulnerable to Russia's political and economic blackmail".

This institution was asked to comment on allegations made by Russian activist Andrei Pivovarov, who said that Serbia's deputy prime minister, Aleksandar Vulin, was involved in his arrest in 2021.

But DASH said that Vulin continues to be on the US sanctions list.

"Our position regarding Aleksandar Vulini is already known. He continues to be under US sanctions. The USA has no role in the appointment of members of the Serbian Government", DASH said in the reply sent to REL.

Vulin was Serbia's interior minister when Pivovarov was arrested in May 2021.

After his release, which took place as part of the largest prisoner swap between Russia and the West on August 1, the Russian activist said in an interview with the Serbian weekly Radar that he had been arrested following information that Vulin was allegedly he gave to the Russian secret services.

Three years ago, the same claims were made by the Russian journalist and activist, Vladimir Kara-Murza - also released on August 1 - but, at that time, Vulini had denied all the accusations.

When asked by REL, the EU said that "we are not in a position" to comment "on this specific case".

"What we can say is that maintaining relations with Russia during its war of aggression against Ukraine is not compatible with EU values ??and the EU membership process," said EU spokesman Peter Stano./ REL
