The US imposes sanctions on over 400 companies for supporting Russia in the war

The United States imposed new sanctions on Friday on more than 400 entities for supporting Russia in its war against Ukraine.

Announced a day before Ukraine's Independence Day, the sanctions target firms in Russia, Europe, Asia and the Middle East accused of helping Russia evade US sanctions and aiding its war in Ukraine, according to a statement. for the Treasury Department press.

President Biden's administration also added 123 firms to the United States' export control list, which requires suppliers to obtain permission before shipping items to companies on the list. Among the companies added Friday are 42 Chinese firms and 63 Russian firms, according to a notice published in the Federal Register.

The United States has repeatedly warned Beijing against supplying Moscow with machinery and technology that supports Russia's defense industry and its large-scale offensive in Ukraine.

China says it has not provided arms to Russia for its war in Ukraine, but has defended what it calls normal trade between Beijing and Moscow.

The US Treasury Department also warned "foreign regulators and financial institutions" not to do business with overseas branches or subsidiaries of Russian financial institutions, including those that are not sanctioned.

"The Department of the Treasury has a number of tools available to respond to the creation of new channels of sanctions avoidance," the statement added.

In imposing new sanctions, the Treasury Department is continuing to "implement commitments" made by President Joe Biden and his counterparts from the Group of Seven most industrialized nations "to disrupt supply chains for Russia's military industry and its pipelines of payments," Treasury Undersecretary Wally Adeyemo of the Treasury said in a statement.

"Companies, financial institutions and governments around the world must ensure that they are not supporting the supply chains of Russia's military industry," he added./ Voa
