Macron: The arrest of the head of Telegram was not a political decision
The President of France, Emmanuel Macron.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the arrest of Pavel Durov, the founder and leader of the Telegram messaging app, was not political.

"The arrest of Telegram's president on French soil was carried out as part of a judicial investigation," Macron wrote on X.

"Now this case is in the hands of the judges", he added.

Durov was detained at Bourget airport, on the outskirts of Paris, on August 24, and is still being questioned.

Telegram published a statement where it said that Durov "has nothing to hide", adding that this platform "is waiting for the quick resolution of this situation".

French media have reported that OFMIN, a French office dealing with the prevention of violence against minors, had issued an arrest warrant for Durov for alleged offenses including fraud, drug smuggling, cyber bullying, organized crime and promoting terrorism. .

"At the heart of this issue is the lack of [content] moderation and platform cooperation, especially in the fight against pedophilia," OFMIN head Jean-Michel Bernigaud wrote in a LinkedIn post.

Telegram, based in Dubai, has more than 900 million users worldwide. During an interview in April, Durov vowed that Telegram aims to be "a neutral platform" and not "a player in geopolitics."

Critics in Ukraine, however, said the platform spreads misinformation and facilitates illegal activity. Some have accused Telegram of having ties to the Russian state and helping it fight against Ukraine./REL
