Senior UN official visits Kursk nuclear power plant

The head of the United Nations Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, arrived on Tuesday at the nuclear power plant in Kursk, which Moscow said has been repeatedly attacked by Ukrainian forces, just 40 kilometers away.

The safety of nuclear power plants has been mentioned frequently since the war in Ukraine started in February 2022.

Following the incursion of Ukrainian forces into Russia – launched on August 6 – attention has turned to the Kursk nuclear power plant, a major Soviet-era nuclear power station.

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine last week of trying to attack the Kursk plant, which houses four Soviet reactors of the same design as the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

In 1986, that plant in Chernobyl had turned into one of the biggest nuclear disasters.

Ukraine has not yet responded to the accusations that it attacked this area.

Ukrainian officials have said a few days ago that the Ukrainian army does not aim to invade Russian lands, but to create a neutral zone to prevent Russian attacks on Ukrainian soil.

Russia, on the other hand, has intensified drone and missile attacks in the last two days in different regions of Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./REL
