India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to US President Joe Biden ahead of his visit to Ukraine, as the White House said it hopes he supports Kiev's stance to end the Russian-led invasion.

Modi, who angered Ukrainians after recently meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, visited Kiev last week and told President Volodymyr Zelensky that "no problem should be solved on the battlefield."

Informing Biden of his visit, during the phone conversation Modi "reiterated India's continued position in favor of dialogue and diplomacy and expressed full support for the restoration of peace and stability," India's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Asked about Biden's response, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the US supports all countries that listen to Zelensky's view on ending the war.

"We welcome any country that wants to help President Zelensky to achieve peace," Kirby told reporters.

Zelensky has demanded the return of all territories that Russia has occupied since it launched the war in February 2022.

India has not explicitly supported Zelensky's position. Despite having close relations with Washington, India has refused to join US sanctions against Moscow, with which it has historic relations.

India also said Modi and Biden also discussed the situation in Bangladesh, where leader Sheikh Hasina, a close ally of New Delhi, resigned and fled the country earlier this month after mass protests challenged her long-standing rule. and more authoritative./ REL
