Germany tightens security and asylum policies after deadly festival attack

Germany's ruling coalition agreed on Thursday to toughen security and asylum policies in the wake of a deadly knife attack.

Three people were killed and eight others were injured in the attack which took place during a festival marking the 650th anniversary of the town of Solingen. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, after which Berlin was criticized for its immigration policies.

The attack has deepened political disagreements over asylum and deportation rules ahead of next month's state elections in Germany, as the suspect in the attack is a Syrian whose asylum claim was rejected.

Thursday's changes include stricter gun regulations. Among them are stricter regulations for carrying weapons, a general ban on long-bladed knives and a strict ban on carrying knives at events such as folk festivals, sporting events and trade fairs.

The new regulation also calls for new federal agencies to conduct background checks on those who want to own guns, so that extremists are not allowed to carry weapons.

Berlin will also toughen laws and procedures for asylum and residence, including lowering the threshold for "strict deportation" for those who commit a crime with a weapon or a dangerous vehicle.

The criteria for removing the status of asylum seeker or refugee will be toughened. There will be more severe punishments for serious crimes, including for young defendants.

Asylum seekers will be denied benefits in Germany, if they enjoy them in other European countries. Meanwhile, the refugees who travel to their countries without great reasons risk losing their status for protection, according to the document of the German government.

This rule does not apply to Ukrainian refugees./ Rel
