Russian official: We will change the nuclear doctrine because of the West
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov

Russia will make changes to its nuclear doctrine in response to the West's actions regarding the war in Ukraine, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said, according to Russian news agency TASS.

Ryabkov did not say what the changes are.

Russia's current nuclear doctrine, set out in a 2020 decree by Russian President Vladimir Putin, states that Russia can use nuclear weapons in the event of a nuclear attack by an enemy or a conventional attack that threatens the existence of the state.

Russia, which has accused the West of using Ukraine to fight Moscow, has previously said it is considering changes to its nuclear doctrine. But Ryabkov's statement so far is the clearest of Russia's intentions to make these changes.

"The work is at an advanced stage and there is a clear goal to make improvements," Ryabkov was quoted as saying.

According to him, the decision to change the nuclear doctrine "is related to the escalating course of our Western enemies" regarding the war in Ukraine.

Ukraine is facing Russian occupation since February 2022. The West helps Kiev with military equipment and other financial and humanitarian aid./ Rel
