Three Israelis are killed in the West Bank

Three Israelis were killed on September 1 after their car was fired upon near the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, Israeli officials said.

The Israeli military confirmed the attack, adding that security forces are searching for the attackers.

Hundreds of Israeli troops have been carrying out raids across the West Bank since Wednesday in one of the biggest sweeps in months in the area, saying the operation is aimed at rooting out Islamist militants.

The international community has called on Israel to stop the operation in the West Bank. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said three policemen who were in the car that was attacked were killed.

"We are fighting on all fronts against a cruel enemy who wants to kill us all," Netanyahu said.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a member of Israel's security cabinet who is a hardline politician, called for more action against Palestinian militants in the West Bank.

Violence in the West Bank has escalated since the war in Gaza began on October 7 between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Israel occupied the West Bank, along with Gaza and East Jerusalem during the Middle East War in 1967. The Palestinians want these three territories to be part of their future state. Three million Palestinians in the West Bank live under Israeli military rule, while the Western-backed Palestinian Authority has limited control over population centers.

More than 500,000 Jewish settlers, who live in settlements built throughout the territory which are considered by most of the international community to be illegal, have Israeli citizenship./ Rel
