The UN starts vaccinating children in Gaza against polio

The United Nations in cooperation with the Palestinian health authorities started the vaccination of 640,000 children in the Gaza Strip.

Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, have agreed to a brief ceasefire in order to carry out this vaccination campaign.

Last month, the World Health Organization confirmed that a baby had been partially paralyzed by the type 2 polio virus. This was the first case of this virus to be recorded in Gaza in the last 25 years.

The vaccination campaign started on Sunday in areas in central Gaza, while in the following days vaccination will be carried out in other areas as well. Fighting will be suspended for at least eight hours over the next three days.

The WHO said the ceasefire would likely have to be extended by one more day.

"These are just the first hours of the first phase of the massive campaign, one of the most complex campaigns in the world," said Juliette Touma, spokeswoman for UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

WHO officials have said at least 90 percent of children must be vaccinated twice within four weeks for the campaign to succeed, but the vaccination drive is facing challenges in Gaza because of the dispute between Israel and Hamas. , which started on October 7 of last year./ Rel
